Construction of the Glass Mazu Temple started in 2007. After five years of work it was opened to the public on 31 March 2012 with a ceremony hosted by the President of Taiwan. The temple celebrates the benevolence of Mazu.
Utilizing good industrial technique and modern electronic technology, a consortium of Taiwanese glass manufacturers sought to honor religious formality, civic ritual, and traditional workmanship – while, at the same time, promoting cultural innovation and ecological preservation.
The challenges were legion. It is the first glass temple in the world, a spiritual center for the people of Taiwan, and a glowing monument to the glass industry here. The name of the temple was given by the King of Heaven himself, to be Taiwan Husheng Temple, which celebrates the great skills of Taiwanese artisans.
Other works by the consortium of glass manufacturers include the Glass Sedan Chair, the Galss Mazu Boat, the Mobil Glass Temple, the Sun-Moon Heaven-Earth Tunnel, and the Tourism Train – which are mobile works of art available at no cost to be displayed in religious festivities or carnivals upon invitation.
